Breda

Rent out or rent a house in the nicest city in the Netherlands at Select a House! Breda is one of the nicest cities in the Netherlands and is therefore a particularly attractive city to live, work and recreate. Breda owes this attractiveness to the historic city center (since 1252 city rights), the green environment (Breda is surrounded by forests) and the central location within the Benelux (motorways and high-speed train with direct connections to major European cities). In addition, Breda offers many facilities that make the living environment more pleasant, such as sports clubs, swimming pools, schools, nurseries, colleges and many employment opportunities. Breda has more than 180,000 inhabitants.

History

The name Breda originated from the contraction Brede Aa, the point where the rivers Mark and Aa flow together. In 1252 Breda acquired city rights. Then, at the beginning of the 14th century, the city was walled. The canals are located around the city. The streets run in a sort of oval shape, a striking feature of old fortified towns. The coat of arms of the city of Breda is very old. The Andrew's Crosses are a reference to their function as judges and thus the guarantee of legal certainty. The castle is a symbol of the power or urban resilience of the Lords of Breda. The angel may be related to the city's heavenly protection. The origin of the lions is probably derived from the coat of arms of the Duke of Brabant, from whom the Lords of Breda kept their rights in fief.

De Grote Markt

The Grote Markt is the main square of Breda and is located in the center of the city. On the Grote Markt is Onze Lieve Vrouwe Kerk or Grote Kerk (15th century). The Grote Markt used to be not as big as it is today. After the big city fire of 1534, a burned-down row of houses was demolished and the Market got the dimensions of today.

There are many catering establishments such as cafes and restaurants on the Grote Markt, often with a terrace. When the weather is nice, it gets busy here. The weekly market on Tuesday and Friday mornings also takes place here. On Wednesday afternoon there is the book and antique market on the Grote Markt.

Haven

The port of Breda initially consisted of an unloading and mooring berth at the end of Vismarktstraat. Between 1552 and 1613 solid quay walls were constructed. This is how the harbor was created, which was very important for peat shipping. After the Mark was filled in within the canals in 1937-1941, the port no longer had a flow. It became a source of stench. That is why the harbor was filled in 1965. The harbor function moved to the vicinity of the sugar factory. In the last weekend of June 2007 the harbor was reopened and now forms a very attractive part of the city center with many restaurants and terraces.

Shopping

Breda is one of the nicest cities in North Brabant and has a lot to offer. Historic buildings and streets provide a unique atmosphere. A very extensive range of shops (872 stores) with large chains and separate small shops ensure that everyone can succeed in the shopping city. The city has numerous restaurants and cafes in the city center to relax after shopping or walking.

There is also an extensive range of shops outside the center of Breda, such as a furniture boulevard with (including IKEA), various hardware stores and garden centers.

Singles

In order to be able to properly defend the city, Breda was walled in at the beginning of the 14th century and the canals were built around the city. In 1552, the natural widening at the confluence of the Mark and Aa was considered ideal for building a harbour. This harbor was filled in from 1965 to 2007. After the reopening of the harbor (2007) it can be reached again via the canals.

You can canoe or take a boat trip through the canals. You then start at the Spanjaardsgat (near the harbor) and you sail through the canals along the many sights of the city.
